City Supports Field House Proposal

The City of Fernie is proud to announce its financial contribution of $525,000, along with the commitment of a long-term lease of city-owned land, to support the Elk Valley Field House Society’s proposal for the construction of a field house. The facility would be constructed on the outdoor rink site, adjacent to the Aquatic Centre, and provide versatile indoor space for a wide range of recreational, sporting, and community activities.

The Elk Valley Field House Society (EVFHS) has been working diligently with local community groups, and residents since the Community Centre was decommissioned to bring forward this proposal. The proposed field house would be operated by the Society and feature multi-purpose gym space and flexible community spaces to accommodate various events and gatherings.

“We are pleased to take this significant step in supporting the Elk Valley Field House project, by confirming $525,000 in direct funding and affirming our support for using the outdoor rink site,” said Deputy Mayor Ted Shoesmith. “We are grateful for the work of the Society and believe this community-led initiative will provide critical access to indoor space and support community gatherings, recreation, and wellness that are so crucial for our community.”

The City’s funding contribution and lease commitment will allow the Society to continue advancing plans, securing additional required funding, and moving forward with detailed design and construction phases.

"The Elk Valley Field House Society is delighted with the continued support from the City of Fernie. The unanimous decision by Council to allocate $525,000 in funding and agreement to work towards a long-term lease of land next to the Fernie Aquatic Centre demonstrates their shared commitment to our vision of creating a much-needed recreational and gathering space for all Elk Valley residents and visitors,” expressed Aysha Haines on behalf of EVFHS.

The City will continue to collaborate with the EVFHS to support the successful delivery of the project and will provide public updates as the initiative progresses. The EVFHS will be hosting information evenings and encourage community members interested in getting involved to reach out to info@fernierec.com
