Emergency Preparedness

The City of Fernie is committed to supporting and serving the citizens of Fernie in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and disasters through a coordinated and responsive emergency management program.

Under the Emergency Program Act, local authorities such as municipalities and regional districts are responsible for responding to emergencies, including providing emergency support servicesThe City's Emergency Program Coordinator works with City departments, emergency services agencies and all levels of government to make plans that will help Fernie to be an emergency resilient community.

The City of Fernie believes that the more work we do today to prepare, the more resilient our city will be in the event of an emergency.

Evacuation Notification System

Make sure to sign up to receive emergency notification through our regional Evacuation Notification System.

This Elk Valley-wide program was launched in summer 2019 and allows you to sign up for text or phone call alerts for any locations in the region that you, or your family members, frequent regularly.

It’s a free service and will only be used in the event of an evacuation order or alert.

Personal Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies happen. Disasters have been occurring around the globe with unprecedented frequency and while this may sound scary, it doesn't have to be. When disaster does strike, the best protection is knowing what to do.

It is important that everyone, from school aged children to seniors, understand that emergency preparedness is something in which we all play an important role. By preparing a personal emergency plan, every member of your family will understand what to do if disaster strikes.

Depending on the severity of an emergency, your household could be on its own for several days while officials help those who need it most. You will need enough supplies to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours following a major emergency as City services could be affected.

Prepare an emergency kit for your family and pets (including food, water, and extra clothing). This kit will be beneficial if you have to leave your home, or survive in your home without water or electricity for several days.
