Sanitary Sewer
The City of Fernie operates and maintains a sewer collection and treatment system. Sewage is directed to the Main Lift Station in Mountview where it is pumped approximately 8 kms to the Sewage Treatment Lagoons south of Cokato Road.
A major goal of the City is to complete the Liquid Waste Management Plan [PDF - 3.8 MB] (LWMP). An LWMP is a process used by many communities to plan and implement a long-term strategy for managing liquid waste and prevent water-related pollution. Once complete the LWMP will identify the best way to manage Fernie's liquid waste and meet all provincial and federal regulations for sewage treatment.
The property owner is fully responsible for maintaining adequate sewage flow to and through the lateral sewer line, from the building structure up to and including the tap connecting to the sewer main.
If your having problems with your sewer line we suggest the following:
➢ Contact a licensed plumber and notify the City of the problem. The plumber shall clear the blockage and begin his investigation into the cause .
➢ You are responsible for clearing the blockage, all costs incurred for investigations and any repairs on your private property. Should the licensed plumber provide a CCTV video showing a pipe defect on the City’s side of the property line, the resident shall present the video to the City.
➢ Costs associated with the repair to the defect on the City’s side of the property line are borne by the City.
