Roads
As of 2021, the City of Fernie maintains approximately 73.1 km of roadway, 30 km of sidewalks, and 22.8 km of pathways and trails throughout the community.
The City is responsible for most roads throughout town but does not govern or provide maintenance to private roads, highways, or roads on strata properties.
When the snow melts, our Operations Department gets to work on annual maintenance programs including street sweeping, grading, boulevard repair, and dust control.
Sweeper trucks target each neighbouhood removing gravel deposited on roads during winter. Residents can expect to receive two passes from the street sweeper each Spring, with additional tidying around town as the snowmelt allows.
Occasionally, Winter snow and ice control operations can result in damage to boulevards. Once the snow has melted, the Streets team completes Spring boulevard repair with an application of soil and grass seed.
Grading of gravel roads takes place periodically throughout the year in priority order, with main access roads taking priority over secondary egress roads. Dust control is applied once per year, typically in June when weather allows. Once dust control has been applied, grading of gravel roads is minimized, to ensure dust control remains effective.
During Spring and Summer the Streets team are also busy with line painting maintenance, repairing potholes, boulevards, and broken sidewalks.
Sections of roads reduced to a gravel base during repairs to utilities throughout late Fall and Winter are paved in the Spring as soon as contractor schedules allow.
