The City of Fernie is now accepting applications for up to five (5) Temporary, Full Time, Summer Student positions within the Parks, Facilities, and Recreation department. Employment for these positions will be on a full-time basis starting on or about May 1st, 2025, and will be part of CUPE Local 2093. This position is posted internally and externally concurrently.
Applicants for the position must be mature, performance orientated individuals with the ability to work extremely well with others and independently with little supervision. They must work in a safe and responsible manner, and exercise good public relations. Applicants must be enrolled in full time post-secondary education.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities will be ensuring the ongoing safe operation and maintenance of community parks, green spaces, playgrounds, and facilities, and assisting with events. Other areas of work within the City are being considered through evaluation of student studies and qualifications.

Operating equipment such as grass cutting machines and weed trimmers.

Labour and landscaping duties such as weeding, seeding, turfing and other grounds and park maintenance.

Cleaning and carrying out minor repairs and painting to shops, yards, parks, equipment, buildings and content and machines as necessary.

Making daily inspections of equipment operated to ensure safety and efficiency.

Collecting garbage and cleaning garbage cans.

Special event preparation.

Maintaining simple records, including maintenance records.

Securing of equipment, property, buildings, and vehicles.

Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Unrestricted, Class 5, BC Driver’s License

Enrolled in full time post-secondary education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Physically capable of completing manual labor-intensive tasks such as lifting, carrying, etc.

Must be able to clearly communicate verbally and in writing with the public and fellow employees.

Exercise independent judgement and initiative.

Safety oriented individual.

General understanding of the use of a variety of tools and equipment related to maintenance.
Additional Information:
All positions are scheduled to end on or before September 1st, 2024. Students will be required to work July 1st for our Canada Day Celebrations, no exceptions. All student position applicants must be returning to a post secondary institution as full-time registered students. Proof of registration and tuition payment for full time studies is mandatory from all students.

Wages are in accordance with CUPE Local 2093 ($18.41/ Hour). This is a non benefited position with limited time off available.
Note: Wages under review during Collective Agreement negotiations with City of Fernie and CUPE Local 2093 and any pay increases will be retroactive.
