The City of Fernie is currently doing an intake of entry-level auxiliary firefighters to join our team on a paid-on-call basis. An Auxiliary Firefighter’s role is to support the full-time firefighters during emergency incidents. Fernie Fire Rescue is an integrated fire department that provides service excellence in fire, medical and rescue operations.
As part of a fully integrated composite team, this position will provide fire suppression, emergency medical and rescue services. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy providing and promoting high quality customer-care to the community, this is the opportunity for you.
Our ideal candidate will be a fully trained NFPA 1001 firefighter with medical first responder certification however, to meet our current operational requirements, we will consider applicants who are willing to undertake training. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal and public relations skills and the following credentials and training are outlined under minimum qualifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid BC class 5 driver’s license minimum (a BC Class 3 driver’s license with air brakes endorsement is preferred)
- Driver’s license with less than seven demerits (a current driver abstract will be required)
- Minimum Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent
- Ability to pass health and wellness and physical testing standards
- Reside within a 10-minute response time of the fire hall upon completion of fire training.
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a current criminal record check with the vulnerable sector that is satisfactory to the City of Fernie.
- Physically and mentally fit to perform firefighter duties
In addition to these requirements, individuals should demonstrate integrity and honesty, reliability, and motivation; be continuously willing to learn, and demonstrate a deep sense of commitment and responsibility to serving the public as part of the Fernie Fire Rescue team.

Compensation has a wage rate of $18/HR and there is no guarantee of hours. Once probationary period (6 months) are completed, Employee & Family Assistance Program benefits are available.
