Safety Reminder: Storm Retention Ponds Can Be Dangerous When Frozen
February 12, 2025
Important Safety Reminder: As we experience ongoing cold temperatures, it's important to be aware that storm retention ponds can be extremely dangerous when frozen.
Retention ponds, such as the Annex Pond and Maiden Lake, have inlet and outlet valves that move water, causing the ice to be uneven and weak in certain areas. Changes from freezing to above-freezing temperatures can also cause the ice to thin and become unstable. Even if the ice appears solid, it can have weak spots not visible from the surface.
Although they may look enticing for winter recreating, the best way to stay safe is to avoid walking, playing, or skating on retention ponds. Please take time to ensure kids also understand the dangers and know to avoid frozen ponds.
